Bringing Science Solutions to the World

** Coming This Fall - LBNL's 10th TOUGH Symposium! **

Overview

Coming this Fall (September 18-20, 2023): A symposium on applications and enhancements to the TOUGH codes for multiphase fluid, heat, and chemical transport will be held IN-PERSON at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). The TOUGH Symposium 2023 will consist of oral and poster presentations. Depending on interest, “short courses” providing training on selected TOUGH codes are tentatively scheduled immediately preceding and/or following the symposium. RockWare will be offering a short course covering the PetraSim interface for the TOUGH suite of simulators as well. (See the schedule for more information)

Symposium Purpose

The purpose of the symposium is to bring together users of the TOUGH family of codes (which includes TOUGH3 (and TOUGH2), iTOUGH2, TMVOC, TOUGHREACT, TOUGH-FLAC, TOUGH+, TOUGH2-MP, and many others) for an open exchange on applications and recent code enhancements. Papers are solicited in all areas of TOUGH applications and development, including but not limited to:

  • Energy Production:
Hydrothermal and Enhanced Geothermal Systems, Gas Hydrates, Hydrocarbon Recovery
  • Subsurface Utilization:
Carbon Dioxide Storage and Utilization, Nuclear Waste
  • Subsurface Energy Storage:
Geologic Hydrogen Storage, Thermal Energy Storage, Compressed Gas Energy Storage
  • Coupled Processes:
Coupled Flow and Geomechanics, Reactive Transport, THMCB Processes, Coupled Well-Reservoir Flow
  • Natural and Enhanced Systems:
Groundwater, Soil Chemistry and Physics, Carbon Dioxide Removal, Contaminant Remediation, Landfills
  • Computational and Mathematical Methods:
Inverse Modeling, Optimization, Experiment Design, Machine Learning, High-Performance Computing
  • TOUGH Developments and Enhancements:
Grid Generation, Pre-/Post-Processing Tools, Equation-of-State and Mechanistic Modeling Capabilities
